³¼SEX, TORTURE & VIDEOTAPE¼³
²
This article was in the `HERALD-SUN' newspaper from Melbourne,
Australia (28/7/92) and I thought it may be interesting for people to read
after the recent Middle-East arguements in our mag. I have my opinions on
the arguements being waged but on such a topic I think it wise to keep my
mouth shut as I wouldn't wanna offend anyone. :-). Tal/Majic 12.

It's the video every Kuwaiti has seen, but no one wants to discuss.
It contains the steamiest sex scene filmed in the oil-rich emirate. The only
problem is that the star of the most sought-after video in the Gulf is a
member of Kuwait's ruling al-Sabah family.
Although the video has become required viewing, few Kuwaitis are
prepared to admit in public that they have seen it for fear of suffering a
fate similar to that of Flight Lieutenant Suleiman al-Adsani, accused by the
Kuwaiti royal family of making the video public.
A year after being flown to Britain for emergancy treatment for burns
suffered when he was covered in paraffin and set on fire, Flt-Lt al-Adsani
remains in hiding in London, fearful that the vengeful hand of the al-Sabahs
may strike again.
The story of the war hero, the sheikh and the sex video goes back to
the darkest days of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990 when Flt-Lt al-Adsani,
an officer in the Kuwaiti Air Force, decided to remain behind and fight the
Iraqis rather than join most of his countrymen, including the royal family,
in fleeing befor Hussein's troops.
Flt-Lt al-Adsani joined the resistance and took part in guerrilla
operations.
He might have expected a hero's welcome after the liberation of Kuwait
had it not been for the discovery he made in the palace of Skeikh Jaber
al-Sabah.
A few weeks after the Iraqi invasion, Flt-Lt al-Adsani had been
ordered to the palace, where he was told he would find weapons. With other
royals, Sheikh Jaber had fled the country with his wife and family.
While at the palace, Flt-Lt al-Adsani and two colleagues opened
Sheikh Jaber's safe and found some valuables and three videos. Flt-Lt
al-Adsani says they opened the safe to prevent valuables falling into the
hands of Iraqi looters.
When the resistance fighters later watched the videos at their hide-
outs, they saw two adventure films - and the sheikh making love to his wife
in a variety of positions. Flt-Lt al-Adsani says the resistance fighters
agreed to hold onto the tape, which appeared to be a home movie made in the
palace bedroom, to prevent it falling into the hands of the Iraqis. But
within weeks of allied troops liberating Kuwait, copies were being circulated.
When the al-Sabahs returned to Kuwait and found out what had happened,
they were incensed. Kuwaiti security officials were ordered to trace all
copies of the tapes and punish anyone who had them.
Sheikh Jaber launched a campaign to track down the culprits. Forty
Kuwaitis, some veterans of the resistance, were tortured. Eventually
Flt-Lt al-Adsani was made to take the blame.
He says he was seized and taken to a dungeon at the sheikh's palace,
where he was beaten and forced to confess. He was the forced into a metal
shower room, where he was covered with paraffin and set alight.
Fearing they might be discovered because of Flt-Lt al-Adsani's
screams, his attackers dragged him out of the shower and doused the flames
with water. He was then taken to hospital.
Flt-Lt al-Adsani's father, Ali, was the health attache at the Kuwait
embassy in London. He arranged for his son to be brought to London, where
he spent seven weeks at the burns unit at Bishop's hospital.
Flt-Lt al-Adsani's case was taken up by Amnesty International as
part of its general inquiry into allegations of torture in Kuwait. Amnesty
asked the Kuwaitis to investigate, but got no reply.
Despite the efforts of the Kuwaiti royal family to suppress the video,
it has been distributed throughout the Gulf, to the extent that most Kuwaitis
and Gulf Arabs have seen the Sheikh Jaber disporting with his wife.
Although Kuwaitis are happy to watch the video in private, they are
reluctant to discuss it. "They do not want to be seen mocking the royal
family in public," explained an Arab jounalist who recently visited the
emirate. "All power is vested in the royal family, and no Kuwaiti can
afford to offend the al-Sabahs."
The story of the video and the terrible vengeance exacted against
Flt-Lt al-Adsani has, however, been seized on by opponents of the al-Sabahs
as an example of the brutality of the regime.
The Arab weekly newspaper `Al-Masala', which is published in Sweden
by Palestinian dissidents, devoted a recent issue to the story. The cover
depicted the Emir of Kuwait with a condom hanging from his nose.
Flt-Lt al-Adsani is in hiding in London, where he is supported by
his father, who is still employed by the embassy. He has little sympathy
for his son. "If he had any sence he would have destroyed the video. I
cannot condone what happened to him, but to some extent is was his own
fault."
